Introducing Quantitative Fit Testing for Hearing Protection at Strategic Health Solutions

In today's evolving occupational health landscape, staying compliant with Alberta’s updated OHS legislation isn’t just smart business—it’s the law. As of March 31, 2023, changes to Part 16 (Noise Exposure) of Alberta’s OHS Code now require employers to conduct fit testing for the hearing protection devices (HPDs) their workers use.

At Strategic Health Solutions, we’re proud to support employers across Northern Alberta with our newest offering: Quantitative Fit Testing for Hearing Protection—a reliable, accurate, and regulation-aligned service that puts your team’s safety and your business’s compliance first.

Workplace Hearing loss prevention

Why Fit Testing Matters

The new OHS rules align with CSA Standard Z94.2-14 (R2019): “Hearing Protection Devices – Performance, Selection, Care, and Use.” This standard ensures hearing protection devices are not only worn—but worn properly and effectively.

Quantitative Fit Testing measures how well an earplug-style HPD fits each worker by using precise, manufacturer-specified methods and equipment. Unlike qualitative tests that rely on subjective responses, this method produces scientific data you can rely on.

Compliance Details Employers Need to Know

✔️ Fit testing is mandatory for all workers exposed to noise levels above 82 dBA

✔️ Testing must be completed annually – each test is valid for 1 year

✔️ Records of fit testing and noise exposure assessments must be kept by employers for a minimum of 3 years

This isn’t just about checking a box—it’s about protecting your workers’ hearing for the long term while shielding your organization from compliance risk.

Why is it Important?

Incorrectly fitted hearing protection can lead to long-term hearing damage, missed OHS compliance marks, and increased risk to worker safety. Our Quantitative Fit Testing service ensures that:

  • Workers are actually receiving the level of protection intended by the earplug.

  • Employers can demonstrate compliance with Alberta OHS requirements.

  • Companies reduce liability and create safer workplaces—backed by trusted, professional testing.
